Laos Experience
Laos – Asia (MARCH 2026)
I always wanted to visit Laos. So I had the chance to get there, after a 26 h flight from Geneva to Luang Prabang. Laos is this place that touches you deep. It feels slower, it is slower, gentler and more spiritual than probably any other place I’ve visited. Extremely welcoming. It is authentic, full with beautiful monasteries, quietness and resilient communities, all around the Mekong river.
All in all I spent 5 wonderful days with Jonathan Taylor (www.jonathantaylorphotography.com). What an experience. I kept upskilling on photography and, together we visited the inside outs of the city and villages around. Full-in immersion, including spending a full day with Monks in a humble monastery, very humbling experience. You will see four mini stories within this post, per Jonathan helped me think differently – much more storytelling vs what I’ve done up to now. Thanks Jonathan!
Alms. The cycle of light in Luang Prabang.
Before the sun rises in Luang Prabang, an ancient ritual begins. In a single, unbroken line, monks walk barefoot through the waking city for Tak Bat, the daily alms ceremony. Kneeling residents and visitors offer small portions of sticky rice, providing the monks with their only meal of the day. It is a beautiful practice of humility and interdependence. No words are exchanged, yet generosity flows silently in both directions, deeply uniting the community.
The Children of the Million Smiles.
Along the banks of the Mekong River near Luang Prabang, childhood is dictated by water and dust. Here in Laos, historically known as the Land of a Million Elephants, the ancient landscape shapes young lives. While they might be timid at first, hiding half of their faces, their curiosity is strong. Ultimately, this quiet shyness gives way to bravery, revealing the bright, welcoming faces of the children of the million smiles.
Mekong Rhythms.
Life along the Mekong River in Luang Prabang moves to its own gentle, unhurried pace. Here, the river isn’t just a scenic backdrop; it is the heartbeat of the community, shaping the quiet moments of everyday life. It is a place where time seems to naturally slow down, preserving generations of tradition and an authentic connection to the water. Experience the deep, enduring rhythms of Laos, where every day unfolds like a living story.
The Cockpit Ritual.
In Luang Prabang, Laos, the cockfighting arena is a chaotic, purpose-built stage where tradition meets high-stakes betting. Dozens gather, their intense shouting fueled by wagers that can exceed $5,000 for champion bird. Beyond the 20-minute combat rounds, a complex bond exists between owner and rooster. These birds are prized pets and vital financial assets, meticulously cared for with performance enhancers, cooling massages, and mid-fight surgery to secure fame and cash.
